Let's Talk About The iPhone SE

Apple launched the new iPhone SE in April 2020. Apple first launched the iPhone SE back in 2018, a lot of people think it was Apple's budget option, but it's in a bit more complicated space than that. The trend in a significant number of iPhone users is that they stick to their phones for a pretty long time, you can walk by the street and find a lot of people still using the iPhone 6 in 2020. It's actually due to the company's effort to design their phones well, and its long term software support that these iPhones stay usable to a great extent for so long, or sometimes it's just that people prefer an old iPhone over a new one.

When the iPhone SE came out in 2018, it had the body of an iPhone 5 but majorly had the specs of an iPhone 6s. This move massively reduced the cost of production, as nothing was new with the design of the product, and gave Apple an opportunity to make the price luring enough for customers with tight budgets. This is a really smart move as it not only earns Apple profits from selling the iPhones, but as it would make more and more people join the ecosystem and help them earn money by selling other products and services as well. The "SE" in iPhone SE could probably stand for "Special Edition", it's not official though! But thinking about the place of the phone, the "special edition" title would suit it well.

Let's now talk about the new iPhone SE, it works on the same formula as the iPhone SE form 2018, take an old phone, put in new internals and sell it for much cheaper. This time around the phone has the body of an iPhone 8, but the only officially confirmed internal that it contains of a newer iPhone is the A13 Bionic chip from the iPhone 11 lineup, this is probably because the transition between the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 6s was much less drastic than it is between the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 11, take for instance the touch id in iPhone 8 and face id in iPhone 11.

The New iPhone SE

The iPhone has a 4.7 inches Retina IPS LCD display with a resolution of 750x1334 pixels, it runs on the A13 Bionic chip and has 3GB of RAM, it comes in three storage options, 64GB, 128GB and 256GB, the phone has a single 12MP, f/1.8 camera at the back and a 7MP, f/2.2 camera at the front, the battery capacity is 1821mAh with 18W fast charging support. As it goes with the design of the old iPhone 8, the new iPhone SE has a front mounted capacitive fingerprint sensor and it starts at a price point of $399 or 42,500 rupees.

Conclusion

If the iPhone SE is a good deal or not is a pretty complicated thing to answer, now, it is pretty impressive to see Apple bring down the price of an iPhone to as low as $399. For a lot of people, it might just be an easy choice to pick an iPhone at that price, for these people the fact that it's an iPhone is a good enough reason to get it. To be honest, there are Android manufacturers that offer phones with way better specs than the new SE at the same price as the new SE. But as it's an iPhone, I can safely say that it's going to pretty much nail the basics, the features that it offers, this is where the question of it being a better pick gets tricky. I think in the end it just comes down to one thing, that is, if you want more than a single camera for $399 or you want a single really good camera for that price, whether you want better specs or you just want a well built phone and an iPhone for that matter.

In 2019, Google came out with the Pixel 3a, the budget phone from Google, the phone had pretty mediocre specs but did one thing good, the camera. The Pixel 3a packed in a really really good camera, which was its selling point. It was an experiment from Google, which turned out to be very successful, the Pixel 3a became the most sold phone by Google. At that time we got to know that majority of smartphone users don't really care so much about bleeding edge specs, they just want their phones to do good with the basics. Google did it and it gave astonishing results, imagine what could happen if Apple does something like that. The 2020 iPhone looks like a promising attempt at doing just that, it could even become a really iconic move from Apple, who knows.
